Stop-Motion Music Video

Exploring Composition, Style and Mood through Drawing and Collage Elements

Students work in small groups to create a stop-motion animation for a section of a song. They collaborate to storyboard and produce their segment, using a combination of primary source drawings and secondary source collage elements that reflected the mood and message of the song. Throughout the project, students learn the fundamentals of stop-motion animation, including storyboarding, creating balanced compositions, dynamic transitions and applying key design principles like mood, unity, and rhythm. Students hone their collaboration skills to create a cohesive scrap-book style by adapting the colours, materials and techniques across their group’s drawings and collage elements. Using the Stop Motion app, students animate their sections of the song. After fine-tuning their segments, we combine them all to bring the entire song to life in a whole-class stop-motion music video.
