I believe Art teaching is about empowering students to find meaning in their work and take ownership of their learning. I aim to foster autonomous, creative and resilient learners who feel safe to take risks, challenge themselves and grow both creatively and personally, as explored in my PME research study.
Growth is rooted in challenge, and I am guided by Dweck’s growth mindset to support students through the inevitable challenges of their learning. Through questioning, reflective practice, goal setting and constructive feedback, students are supported in navigating the creative process. Peer review and collaborative projects also play a vital role in my classroom, encouraging students to develop empathy, autonomy, communication and critical thinking skills. When tailored for individual needs and abilities, these practices create a supportive environment for students’ holistic development, where they feel respected, included, valued and empowered in their creative learning.
