Digital Media

ICT in Art Education

Including ICT in art education is a new and important facet of our curriculum. Art teachers need to be both competent in teaching ICT skills and supporting students in making digital artwork. However, we also must be conscious of the wider implications, policies, benefits and challenges of integrating digital technologies into our pedagogical practices.

This research interrogates policies such as the Council of Europe's 'Digital Citizenship Education Handbook', the 'Digital Strategy for Schools to 2027' and the European Commission's 'Digital Competence Framework for Citizens'. I have considered the digital competencies needed by young people based on these policies and devised a unit of learning that supports students' understanding of social interactions and behaviours ("netiquette") in the digital world. Students compare and contrast the norms of social media and real world interactions as a way for students to explore and make meaning of these ever-changing, overlapping spaces.
